'Tour de France' Suspicious substances found in Tour de France trashcans
July 27th 2009
The French anti-doping chief has told "Le Monde" that substances possibly used for doping were found in the trashcans of some Tour de France teams. He believes two new types of drugs were used at this year's race.
While many commentators praised what they said looked like a doping-free Tour de France, the head of the French anti-doping agency AFLD, Pierre Bordry, said he suspects riders are still using performance-enhancing substances or methods.
Bordry told French daily Le Monde that medicines were found in some of the trashcans of some teams.
"We found several strong medications, including a substance which produces insulin and is normally used for diabetes," he said.
After Sunday's Tour finish without a since positive doping test, headlines were largely positive about a race not tainted by doping substances. Headlines appeared such as "Drugs war is being won" or "Tour chief hails clean race," but Bordry is not convinced.
He said he believes that riders are having autologous blood transfusions and that two new types of doping substances were possibly used in the race, including one that has the same effect as EPO, and another which increases strength and burns fat.
Bordry says methods for detecting the substances could be developed by the fall.

The surprise result in this race was the great performance bythe USA's Jarrod Shoemaker.
It was great to see Alexander Brukhankov get on the podium as he has only recently stepped up from the junior races. Brukhankov really looks to give it 'his all' when he races and this is a well deserved result given how he is prepared to go off the front in the cycle leg.
Emma Moffatt looks to have the womans series won all ready with her 3rd win. Emma Snowsill is out with a surgery for a larbral tear and Vanessa Fernandes has left it pretty late if she wants to come back and take the series.

'Peak to Peak' multisport race.
Queenstown, N.Z.
July 26th, 2009
![]()
DOUGAL ALLAN WINS THE 2009 NORTHFACE PEAK TO PEAK TITLE Talented young multisporter and adventure racer Dougal Allan (Wanaka) put the hammer down in the The North Face Peak to Peak in Queenstown yesterday to win the high profile event, which races from the top of The Remarkables to the top of Coronet Peak, for the second time.
Allan stopped the clock at the finish line at Coronet Peak in 2hrs 19. 13, three minutes ahead of prominent multisporters Gavin Mason (Wanaka) in 2.21.44 and Mike Kelly (Queenstown) who took third in 2.24.16. The 2008 winner Glen Currie, returning to endurance racing after a serious illness, achieved a creditable fourth place.
The event attracted 50 individual competitors and 67 teams and was held in cold but sunny, clear conditions. It began with a 2km ski or snowboard on The Remarkables finishing at the access road, followed by a 17km mountain bike road down the high altitude road to Lake Wakatipu. A 7km paddle to Queenstown Bay led to a 9km run from Queenstown via Arthurs Point to a changeover point near the foot of Coronet Peak for the final 9km cycle ride to the finish.
Allan, who was eighth in the Coast to Coast Longest Day this year, was pleased with his win. Conditions were perfect but skiing for me was definitely the hardest leg. I managed to get away on the run but the Coronet Peak road biking section was interesting as I only had my granny gear' working.
Wanaka physiotherapist Joanne Williams proved to be too strong for the rest of the women's open field, finishing after a solid race, in 2.47.49. She made a fast start on the skiing leg and was among the top contenders to complete this section, putting her in an unassailable position from the outset.
It was a great experience but it was definitely a bit of a grind in places, she said after finishing ahead of Roxburgh athlete Kath Kelly in 2.54.25.
A text book performance was executed by the crack Outside Sports Queenstown team of Geoff Small, Jim Hawkridge, Steve Norton and Adrian Bailey to win the coveted open teams' title. The team, who claimed it had been a long time coming, was given a flying start by New Zealand freestyle guru Geoff Small who blitzed the other skiers on The Remarkables Homeward Bound run to set them up for the lead throughout the race.
Outside Sports clocked 2.06.16 ahead of R & R Sport Queenstown and Outside Sports Wanaka was third in 2.14.25.

Chrissie Wellington sets World record time at Challenge Roth
Roth, GermanyJuly 12th
Chrissie Wellington in action at Roth yesterday. The German television clips only showed her smiling as she 'blew away' the old record by roughly 13 minutes.
It is nice to see she wasn't smiling all the way as I was out there doing the whole thing and it wasn't as easy as the television coverage made it look.
Also in the womans race Scotland's Catriona Morrison put out a really fast time for her first time over this distance to take 3rd place.

In the mens race it was Australia's Pete Jacobs who lead out early putting a decent gap into the field in the swim.
Normann Sadler put the fastest bike split in of the day in just 4hrs and 14mins 42seconds, a time which is just seconds outside the course record. The course record is held by Jurgen Zack who took a few seconds off Thomas Hellreigers best time(but Hellrigers time included the bike transition and was also 400meters longer due to change in the bike/run transition area after his time was set).
Richard Ussher's 3rd place would have surprised a few people, but for those in his home of New Zealand who have watched his transition from long distance multisport to triathlon it is no surprise.
Petr Vabrousek's string of top 10 results in the past years is the most consistant of any triathlete over this distance and is pretty incredible given the high calibre of this field.
There was a relay event run on the same day, and the fastest bike split was 3:59:11 (the overall time for them was 7:04:56 with the other members doing a 0:45:55 swim and a 2:17:11 run!)

Story below from Triathlon.org :
Canadian Simon Whitfield's renown sprint finish did not let him down today at the Hy-Vee ITU Triathlon Elite Cup. In what seemed like a replay from the Beijing Olympic Games, four men came into the finish straight together side by side: Whitfield, Germany's Jan Frodeno, who was the man to pip Whitfield in Beijing, Australia's Brad Kahlefeldt and New Zealand's Kris Gemmell. Unlike Beijing however, Whitfield would cross the line first with an elated roar one second ahead of his chasers in a time of 1 hour 49 minutes and 43 seconds, claiming triathlon's top payday. After a photo finish review, the third of the season, it was determined Australia's Brad Kahlefeldt just nipped the tall German at the line for second with Frodeno in third. Gemmell finished fourth.
That was some payback for last year, in a sporting sense, said Whitfield at the finish. I wanted to get one over on Jan [Frodeno] after last year's Olympic Games. I always want to win the races the other guys want to win. First thing I'm doing is buying this amazing toy house for my daughter Pippa. She's been running round the front yard at home and really inspired me."
Sixty-two athletes hit the warm, calm waters together and almost that entire group would exit together. With such a large group forming on the bike it looked to be a runner's race, but with $200,000 on the line the strong cyclists were not content to hand it over without a fight. Once a pace had been set it was attack after attack over the 40 kilometre bike loop keeping the average speed high at over 42km/hr. Led by the 6'5 Matt Reed of the USA, there would be over a dozen attempts to shake things up. None would be successful however until Reed's fourth attempt with three laps remaining. On his wheel was another strong cyclist in Stuart Hayes of Great Britain. These two put almost a minute on the chasers by the second transition.
Their efforts from the bike showed though and the two soon became the chasers as the sport's thoroughbreds took aim. By the end of the first lap there would be only six: Whitfield, Kahlefeldt, Frodeno, Gemmell with Jarrod Shoemaker of the USA and Javier Gomez of Spain.

10. Helen Jenkins (GBR) 2:03:45 -- $8,000
Current ITU series points leader Emma Moffatt of Australia continued her dream season with a win today at triathlon's largest payday in a time of 1 hour 59 minutes and 46 seconds. With over $1million USD in prize money up for grabs this weekend it was the Beijing Olympic bronze medallist who powered her way through the Olympic calibre field to claim the $200,000 first place prize in the Hy-Vee ITU Triathlon Elite Cup this morning. In second was the other Aussie Emma, Emma Snowsill, 1 minute 33 seconds behind. And in third, Canada's Lauren Groves another 12 seconds back.
"Wow, it's amazing, it hasn't sunk in at all yet, commented Moffatt at the finish. It's great to put together two great races in six days and to come away with the win, I'm ecstatic. It was good to make the break and get a lead and I was a bit concerned when Andrea [Hewitt] came with me for the first lap. I was just trying to focus on running and not on the money. I don't know what I'm going to do with it, I haven't given it any thought."
Sweltering, windy conditions greeted the 50 starters as they dived into Blue Heron Lake this morning. In typical fashion American swim expert Sara McLarty led out of the water, 37 seconds ahead of the group. Her lead would not last long though with an efficient pack led by last week's Washington D.C. Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship winner Moffatt, New Zealand's Andrea Hewitt, 2008 world champion Helen Jenkins of Great Britain and the American duo of Sarah Haskins and Laura Bennett having closed the gap in the first three laps of eight.

Hewitt was just delighted with her second World Cup victory of her career, especially after a disappointing 39 th after crashing heavily in Korea.
I just love Madrid, I can't believe it! It was so close and came down to the last centimetre, I am just so happy. I knew I had a good result, but to then hear I had won, it is amazing.
With two previous podium finishes on the Madrid course, it is a favoured race for the diminutive Kiwi with the big heart and fast finish.
This course really suits me on all counts. The heat is good for me; the non-wetsuit swim suits me, the hills on the bike are great for my strength and it finishes with a flat run. This is just so good.
Hewitt summed up an amazing finish that saw a group of five begin to sprint 200m out and ended with Hewitt and Norden side by side in the photo.
I started a little early then held back and after a few surges just went for the line in the final 15 metres. My main goal this year is to be highly ranked in the World Champs Series so I am just so stoked to get first.

Former pro cyclist and triathlete Steve Larsen collapses during a workout, dies aged 39.
May 20th 2009
Steve Larsen, probably the only professional who competed and won major races as a mountain biker, road biker and triathlete, died Tuesday evening after collapsing during a running workout
"He was doing a track workout and he collapsed. They did CPR immediately and an ambulance arrived quickly, but they weren't able to save him," his friend Michael Nyberg told VeloNews
An autopsy showed that multi-sport athlete Steve Larsen likely did not die of a heart attack, his brother told VeloNews Wednesday.
Mike Larsen said the autopsy ruled out a 'heart attack' and a blood clot. The cause of death may have been viral or related to allergies, he said.
"The last few weeks he had been having serious troubles with his breathing," Mike Larsen said. He said his brother had been seeing a doctor about his breathing troubles and had been unable to finish his workouts.
The above story in copied in part from this article by VeloNews.com
Editor note : The cause of Steve Larsen's death has not been confirmed at this stage. A 'heart attack' is a general term used to describe sudden death due to the blockage of the coronary arteries(heart muscle walls arteries). It is still possible that other diseases affecting the heart can cause sudden 'cardiac arrest' such as mycarditis from a bacterial or viral infection. So be careful and take time out from training and racing if you are having any signs of ill health. Here is another article on this site which is talks about dealing with illness in triathlon training.

The ITU organisers couldn't have asked for a better race to begin with. It was spectacular to watch as there were 2 bike break groups of 2 athletes 'off the front' at the end of the cycle. One of these 4 athletes managed to hold on and take 3rd.
It is pretty well known amongst all the athletes who can run the fastest should all the yclists come in as one group. The bike being only 40kms is actually very short and to go 'off the front' with a couple of others isn't that big of a risk. I do like this bit from Triathlon.org :
It's all a blur, when it comes down to those sort of situations, admitted Docherty. It's just mind over body. I couldn't really feel my legs but they wanted to go forward. Brad got a bit of a lead on me and I came back and inched in front and we both just went for the line. It was a case of just cross your fingers and go for it!
Deep down I know I have a pretty good sprint. That was my game plan going into the Olympic Games but unfortunately it didn't quite go my way. This time it paid off but that Olympic gold medal is going to haunt me and until I achieve that I'm not going to stop.
Editor note : Bevan Docherty got silver at Athens olympics and bronze at Beijing olympics.
Also here is a bit from Bevan Docherty's and Chris Gemmel's race report :
As we hit transition 2, I found myself mid pack and had to work extra hard over the first 1km to claw my way back to the front, running through the first 1km in a blistering pace of 2:40 min/km!
And the link to the above race report.

The mens race was great in that the top men were still running in close proximity to each other in the last 10kms of the marathon.

Bevan Docherty and Kirsten Sweetland are looking strong. Chris Gemmel crashed out on a corner at 60k/hr but is apparently just a bit bruised. Clark Ellice is doin well to be onl 10secs back considering he is quite a big guy. Shane Reed was in 8th and only 1min 23sec back so he will improve.

Matt Reed did well to overcome a rough start in the swim to beat the 2007 world champion over this distance Andy Potts.
The womans race looks like a close battle, but am sure Sam Warriner would have lead it if it wasn't for a Stingray incident the day before.
More and more ITU athletes stepping up to the 1/2 ironman distance. Five of the woman are clearly recogniseable as performing at the top of ITU recently. And the top 2 men are from the top of the ITU also.

More doping issues for the Austrian athletes
Austria
March 28th 2009
Austrian pro ITU triathlete Lisa Hütthaler admitted this week to the Austrian daily Kurier that she had been doping(EPO use).
Even with what is written below the creator of this site feels some sympathy to Hütthaler and hopes that something useful comes out of it all.
Above and below is a photo of Lisa Hütthaler from the ITU world cup race in New Zealand in March 2008.
These photos turned up on a camera card uploaded last week, which was great because thought they were lost in my last computer crash. Because the sports of triathlon/cycling need to clean up there act up with regard to doping, the above image was my screensaver since finding the original photos. The above photo stood out to me because was very surprised when taking it, as she dropped the water bottle over her shoulder with little ragard for anyone who may have been behind(haven't seen this before in many races watched).
My personal view however is that some team managers/leaders who are willing to break the rules are creating the situation.
Also at the the N.Z 2008 world cup race, she crashed into her Austrian teammate(2004 gold medalist and Hutthaler's competition to make the '08 team), on the bike. Other people in the bike pack said it looked intentional. Hutthaler was unscathed, but her teammate needed 30 stitches in her face. I have heard the above from several sources but didn't see it happen so not sure it is true.
In a stunning 2 page interview, Hütthaler talked about the doping, some of the people behind the network and her reasons for talking now.
"I have made this decision because I miss the sport very much. And because I am sick of all the lies," said Hütthaler when asked about her reasons to come clean now. "I can't change what has already happened. But I can help out to that it gets better some time. It is not easy. I am afraid and am considering moving to another country."Currently Hütthaler is awaiting criminal charges as she stands accused of attempting to bribe a lab employee of the lab who tested her B sample. Now she has come clean about her doping and also fingered Irondoc Alex Zoubek and Stefan Matschiner, the former manager of Austrian road pro Bernhard Kohl as suppliers.
Also Austrian Kohl, who finished third in the 2008 'Tour de France', testified at NADA after he had tested positive and admitted he had used the drug.
The hearing was held behind closed doors, and it was not immediately clear whether Kohl had revealed how he got the performance-enhancing drug.
"I've made my statement, and I've been honest," Kohl said, without elaborating. "If it's appreciated (by NADA), it will be a good sign for the sport."

It is $5 USD for a 2 year sub or if you buy any clothing you will get a 2 year sub. Minimum clothing purchase is $38 USD for free postage and packing.
And there will be a few new articles on it soon also including a great one on 'anti-inflammatory use in endurance sports' by a friend with a pharmacy and sports medicine degree.

The good weather proved a sign of racing to come with the women's Contact Cup race a duel between the world class athletes and some aspiring Kiwis. On the bike a group formed that included Hewitt, Warriner, Lisa Norden (Sweden), Kate Roberts (South Africa), Rebecca Spence (Auckland) and Kate McIlroy (Wellington).
But confusion at the transition from bike to run saw Warriner, Norden and Spence ride too far, emerging on the main course before turning and retracing their steps some 200m to the transition area.
By now Hewitt, Tanner and others had cleared out, but Warriner showed her great determination by quickly gathering in most of the field to trail Hewitt, who lead at the halfway point in the run by 20 seconds. It proved enough, Warriner's amazing effort was good for second but over a short 4.65km she was never going to regain the lost ground on Hewitt with the Christchurch athlete delighted with her first race of the season. Wow, that was great. I enjoyed the course and the crowd and am thrilled to win. This was my first race of the year so I wasn't sure how I was going to go but I felt great, especially on the run where I felt really strong.

Richard Usher
1st Jodi Currie -5:30:03 (not bad after doing the 'Challenge wanaka' two weekends before).
2nd Ange Burnett - 6:09:48
There was a good field at this event. There was also duathlons of different lengths, multisports which included a kayak section and a 1/4 iron-distance triathlon. Did the 1/4 iron-distance triathlon and it was a good course and there were good prizes for all the events............... highly recommend it. Also was pretty special to have the likes of Richard Usher and Luke Dragstra racing today. Luke pulled out during the bike and don't blame him as it is not easy to recover from going hard at 'Challenge Wanaka' 2 weekends ago.
Richard Usher will be one to watch in taupo this year. And from the quick chat I had with him, Kona sounds like a goal. he could have gone last year as a pro but chose not to.

The news item at the top of my list!
Southland, New Zealand

The latest on Richard Usher and why he wasn't on the start line at 'Challenge Wanaka'
Southland has been my home for 6 months of the year for the last 2 years. Was thinking about entering our local 1/2 iron-distance event before reading this, so now will have to take my camera as well.
N.Z Triathlon 'Training Camps'
New Zealand
2009, 2010.........................
They are put on here as links for people from N.Z and all over the world.
Well there is the 'Epic Camp' in January/February to begin with Gordo, John Newsom and Scott Molina etc.... I checked it out and it is one of the best in the world.
There has been a Wanaka training camp in November held for the last 2 years; will post more on this if it continues. I did one and the knowledge was invaluable, and the group training was super.
Cameron Brown also runs training camps. He is one of the best in the world. Six times N.Z.ironman champion. Also top 3 in Kona a few times.
And there is some of the best group training an training camps which are advertised at times in the 'Canterbury Triathlon Club' website. They are a great group and there are contacts available on the site. If you are in this area then you can go along with them for training rides etc; from my experience.
And if you want to be a professional triathlete then the 'Tour of Southland' is a good stepping stone. Four professional triathletes have used it as a build-up that I know of including Chris Gemmel, and it is held in November each year.

And some inspiration from the race:
This 73 year old guy on the left(Garth) did the race today in just under 17 1/2 hrs.
The cut-off was 17 1/2 hours and the conditions got a bit more windy as the day went on, so those people out on the course longer did a harder race in that respect.
The 230 years of 'life experience' team on the right completed it in just under 15hours.

NZ long distance Triathlon champs
Tauranga, January 10th 2009
Taupos Duncan Milne has won the mens title for the first time, holding off eight-time champion Cameron Brown who recovered from more than 6 minutes lost late on the bike leg because of a puncture, to be only 27 seconds behind the winner in second place.
Samantha Warriner has smashed the race record on the way to victory in the 20th anniversary of the Port of Tauranga half ironman.
Warriner clocked 4 hours, 10 minutes and 47 seconds for the two kilometre swim, 90 kilometre bike ride and 21 kilometre run, breaking the 13-year-old record by two and a half minutes. She finished 8 minutes ahead of two-time winner Joanna Lawn.
